During our 11-day holiday at this luxurious resort, we took in everything it had to offer, from working out at the gym to indulging in the delicious dining options.
This blog post aims to provide an authentic review of our stay and a firsthand experience of what to expect when you take a holiday at this Adult-Only Hotel in La Romana. We cover the good and the bad parts, offering a glimpse into what to expect when you choose to stay at the Bahia Principe Luxury Bouganville Hotel in the beautiful Dominican Republic.
Location
Tucked away in San Pedro de Macoris-La Romana, Bahia Principe Luxury Bouganville is an all-inclusive adults-only resort inviting you to soak up a blend of tropical luxury and peaceful tranquillity.
This is our first trip to the Dominican Republic, and we were intrigued by this stunning hotel elegantly perched along La Romana’s scenic coast.
It offers a serene escape, a world away from the daily hustle – just what we were looking for. The area isn’t bustling with activity; those after more action might prefer Punta Cana.
The closest airport is La Romana International Airport, however we booked to fly into Punta Cana and took the included tui transfer to the hotel which took just over 1 hour.
Booking
We went with Luke’s Mum and Dad (who you will also see in the pictures) in January 2024 for a relaxing stay. Just a tip: it’s cheaper to book couples separately than together. Tui often has deals where you save money when you spend over a certain amount, so booking separately can help you take advantage of this!
Bahia App
You can download the Bahia App 10 days before you arrive at the hotel. This allows you to check in to the Luxury Boganville Hotel ahead of time and make reservations for all the al a carte restaurants.
Lobby
You first get dropped off at the sister hotel’s reception, La Romana Bahia Principe Grand. There was no word on what to do, so we ended up queuing at that hotel’s reception, only to find out we should’ve hopped on a buggy to the other hotel!
No biggie; we were in vacation mode anyway. But just to let you know, skip the wait and hop on the buggy to get checked in quicker.
We were warmly welcomed by the reception when we arrived, beginning our unforgettable stay.
The staff were super attentive and ready to cater to our every need. We were escorted to our room by our butler, the lovely Emelly. Who shared her phone number with us and told us to reach out for anything! We made the most of it, and she went above and beyond for us during our 11-day stay!
Rooms
We opted for a spacious, roomy, and comfy Deluxe Junior Suite with a Garden View Room.
The room boasted excellent air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a safe, and a compact ironing board complete with a traditional heavy iron – a non-steam model better than any modern iron I’ve ever used!
Our room, 54112, was at the far end, with a balcony overlooking the quiet pool. We loved this spot and would pick that room again if we returned.
Luke’s parents were across the corridor, with a view of the lobby/Takara restaurant. Even though it was still quiet, their view wasn’t quite as nice as ours.
The well-kept rooms were spacious but felt a bit old-fashioned. A modern touch-up would have jazzed up the place even more. The rooms’ location was quiet day and night; we were right at the end of the corridor, and the stairs were in the middle of the block, so no one needed to walk down to our area.
The carpets in the corridors were very old and faded. But despite my mention of the dated appearance, it was all spotlessly clean, so I can not complain.
Bathroom
The bathrooms were impressively spacious, boasting luxurious his-and-her sinks for added convenience.
The elegant design included a refreshing shower area, alongside a large jacuzzi-style bath perfect for unwinding after a long day, it was just about big enough for us both!
Hairdryer
I must mention the hairdryer! I have thick hair, and it takes ages to dry, but the hairdryer they included in the bathroom is amazing, better than most hotel hairdryers. It is attached to the wall, though, so you have to do your hair in the bathroom, which gets quite heated!
Mini Bar
The room also featured a coffee machine. It took some working out to use. It is a filter bag you put in the machine. They supplied tea bags but no kettle, so I had to run the coffee machine without the coffee to get some hot water for a cup of tea.
The stocked fridge contained a refreshing assortment of water, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, beer, and spirits, catering to different preferences. These are all included in the all-inclusive package.
It truly had everything we needed for a relaxed and enjoyable stay. One delightful surprise was that whenever we took a drink from the fridge, they promptly replenished it with a double, adding an extra touch of thoughtfulness to our experience.
Room Service
There is room service available, but we did not use it. I did look at it, and it seems you can order 24 hours a day!
Cleaning
As already mentioned, the rooms were spotlessly clean, and we were very happy with the standard of cleanliness shown by the maids. They always looked immaculately dressed and seemed happy in their job.
While we were there, they had a staff appreciation day, so here is a little picture of the amazing resort maids!
Ocean View Rooms
We spoke to people who had paid extra to stay in the Ocean Front Rooms; it would seem these rooms are not worth the extra money.
They have a very large balcony in the direction of the view of the ocean, but the many palm trees obscure it. They overlook the activity pool/ beach restaurant, so don’t expect a quiet balcony during the day.
Pools
Quiet Pool
The swim-up bar was well manned by our favourite staff members, who kept us topped up with drinks all day.
We thoroughly enjoyed all the cocktails they made.
Some of our favourites were the Bahama Rumba with or without rum (ask for extra fruit), Dirty Monkey, Mojito, Chocolate Mudslide, and Daiquiri Maracuya (passion fruit cocktail seen above).
At lunchtime there was a guy with a snack bike who brought around sandwiches, fried chicken and ice lollies.
The pool maintenance guy worked tirelessly every morning to clean the pool, but there seemed to be a problem with the filter. I wouldn’t say it was dirty, but by the afternoon, many bugs (including wasps) were floating around because the filter was not working to remove them.
They did have some maintenance work going on and an outside worker looking and testing it, so I believe the issue was being addressed.
Fun Pool
That’s not to say we didn’t enjoy the entertainment! The sound of activities echoed down to the quiet pool, calling us to venture down and see what fun was happening!
Shop
There is a little stand at the big pool where you can buy suncream, pool floats, and crisps.
Coco Coconut / Pina Pineapple
You can get a freshly made tropical cocktail from this pool at a stand for $5,chopped and mixed and poured back inside the pineapple or coconut shell.
While you can get drinks for free all-inclusive, this was a nice touch!
Jacuzzi Pools
There was also another quiet area next door to the fun pool. It had a couple of jacuzzi pools to relax in and its own bar. Quite a nice location if you want to be near the entertainment but not in the midst of it all!
Beach
There was a lovely long stretch of golden sands, with beautiful tall palm trees that added to the charming atmosphere. Many comfy seats, including ultra-relaxing Bali beds, were available to soak in the laid-back Caribbean vibe.
There is a big drop when you walk into the sea. We only went in once, but I am a pool person, so I struck with the pool after that. I am not a fan of swimming in the sea, and it’s even worse when I can’t see what’s swimming around me!
The sea isn’t the usual crystal-blue Caribbean sea; it is sandy and murky instead. I knew this in advance, so it didn’t let me down.
It didn’t stop us from booking, but it might not be the best pick for beach lovers or those who want a hotel good for snorkelling. If you want a day trip to a nicer beach, you can book a trip to Soana Island or Catalina Island. We give more advice for day trips later.
Romantic Dinner
They have a romantic dinner in the evening. You can choose the setting between the beach and the pool. They will set up a private table for you with champagne and roses and your own personal waiter.
It costs $75 per person for lobster and steak or $55 per person for just steak.
Beach Club
There is a beach club about a 5-10 minute walk down the beach. This is free for you to use; however, the drinks and food are not all-inclusive, so take some money with you to spend here.
It has an infinity pool looking over the beach. It’s a very pretty view, quiet and relaxed. I didn’t stay long enough to sample the food or drinks. The pool is open 8 am to 6 pm November- May and 8 am to 7 pm May – October.
Daytime Entertainment
Daytime Entertainment Timetables
As you can see, there is plenty of daytime activities to do, from fitness classes to learning Spanish and playing games.
Here are a few things we enjoyed. Remember you can also enjoy the activities at the La Romana Hotel too!
Pool Tables
There are two pool tables at the main lobby bar. They are free to use all day and night.
Pool Party
Whilst staying at the resort, we had the opportunity to join a lively pool party. The event was set to the upbeat sounds of club music, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
As an added touch of excitement, a foam machine was in full swing, pumping frothy bubbles into the pool, adding to the fun and creating a memorable experience for all attendees.
Circus Show
Watching from the poolside was a delight. The performers showcased acrobatics, aerial silk displays, an aerial hoop show, tumbling acts, chair balancing, juggling, and a mesmerising strong men’s adagio balancing act. It exceeded my expectations!
Market
One afternoon, the family La Romana Hotel set up a market in the reception lobby, where souvenirs, from T-shirts to jewellery, could be bought.
Fitness Entertainment
I used the morning pilates class when I was not at the gym.
Dominican Dancing Show & BBQ
They hosted a BBQ by the lively pool, where graceful Dominican dancers showcased their moves before the feast began.
Bingo
Evening Entertainment
Couple Show
We watched the couples show, in which four couples competed in dancing, singing, and other funny competitions to win the title of best couple.
Beach Party
Once a week, they have an eagerly anticipated and vibrant beach party. Laughter fills the air as the staff and holiday goers gather to enjoy the lively ambience on the beach.
Groovy tunes, mesmerising dancing light shows, and a spirited limbo competition add an extra layer of excitement to the evening.
Just make sure you spray with mosquito spray before you go, as you will get bitten!
Karaoke
We didn’t stick around too long for this one. Singing is not our strong point!
Magician
We enjoyed watching a magician doing some tricks he included members of the audience too.
Live Music
Live music was played on a small stage in one of the lobby bars every evening, including violinist and saxophonist.
70/80’s Night
My favourite entertainment night was the 70-80’s Night.
We thoroughly enjoyed the event – it was filled with vibrant dancing, lively singing, and eye-catching neon outfits.
The atmosphere was electric, and it truly made the experience unforgettable!
Casino
There is even a casino on site for those looking to add excitement to their night.
Disco
Buffet Restaurants
Jazmin Main Restaurant – Dinner and Lunch Buffet
It is not permitted to wear pool or beach clothing for lunch or dinner. However, you can wear it if it is dry and you cover it up with clothing. They have people at the doors who will turn people away. We saw a couple try to enter at dinner wearing dressing gowns. They were told to get dressed or order room service instead, rightly so!
Las Dalias Restaurant – Breakfast
This is the place where we savoured breakfast each morning. It offered a buffet-style spread catering to all tastes, energising us with delightful options and the freshest produce available for the day ahead.
The breakfast coffee service was satisfactory; however, when I asked for tea, the staff seemed confused, and it took quite a while. I just wanted to flag this; I have no complaints, though!
We enjoyed that you could enjoy your breakfast outside at this restaurant.
Oh and I enjoyed that you could enjoy a glass of sparkling wine or a mimosa in the morning for the days that I was not going to the gym or yoga!
Los Corales Beach – Lunch Buffet
This restaurant is situated beside the main pool and the beach. It was well-shaded and you got a nice breeze coming through to keep you cool ehilst you ate lunch. The selection of food was good. from small midday bites to a more fulfilling big lunch.
As mentioned earlier, I did not like drinking out of plastic glasses. I understand it is near the pool and beach, but this is an adults-only hotel, so I am sure we can be trusted! Not a major issue but we preferred to eat in the Jazmin Restaurant at lunchtime.
Orquidea Main Restaurant – Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
This restaurant is located at the Bahia Principe Grand La Romana Hotel, just an 8-minute stroll from the Luxury Bouganville Lobby. You can dine here for any meal you like, and it makes a nice change of scenery.
We visited and found it quite similar to what the adult-only resort offers. The restaurant, though spacious, serves the same food. We personally liked the Bouganville restaurant better.
A La Carte Restaurants
So now you know all about the buffet options, let’s move on to the a la carte restaurants.
Don Pablo Gourmet Restaurant – Dinner
Indulge in a fancy meal with tasty hand-crafted gourmet dishes at a gorgeous gourmet restaurant.
We tried two meals there – the Seafood Soup was yummy, and we all loved the Beef Sirloin and Lamb Chops for mains.
The showstopper was the Crepe Suzette dessert, which they flambeed right before us!
Rodizio Restaurant – Beach
By evening, the Beach restaurant Los Corales transformed into a Brazillian Steakhouse to enjoy your evening meal, offering delicious grilled delights on skewers.
You start with the salad bar, then grilled vegetables arrive at your table.
Next, waiters stroll around with skewers loaded with grilled meat, poultry, and fish, carving it onto your plate. They even have a skewer with garlic bread and grilled pineapple!
You’re given a card to flip when ready for more meat. It was a unique experience we really enjoyed.
Here is what we enjoyed
- Sausages
- Pork
- Chicken
- Turkey wrapped in Bacon
- Flank Steak
- Picanha Steak
- Salmon
- Pineapple
We had a great time, although we wished we had saved room for the better meats and fish toward the end, like the Salmon, flank steak, and picanha.
By the time they were served, I was too full to enjoy, so I only had a tiny piece. Wished I had them instead of the slightly overcooked chicken and turkey!
Oriental Takara Restaurant – Asian
Everyone is served an appetizer of sushi, which we enjoyed. For starters, we indulged in spring rolls, a poke bowl, shrimp, and vegetable tempura. For the mains, the Teppanyaki and Wok Noodles were our favourite options. We also enjoyed bananas and ice cream.
Le Gourmet Restaurant
El Pescador- Seafood Restaurant
Fresh seafood and a breezy ambience gave a true taste of the sea, though patience was required at times for the service. It is situated on the La Romana resort, we had noisy children seated next to us, and the food was just average.
We actually preferred the buffet restaurant seafood night better than this. It wasn’t terrible, just not as good as the rest! But we met other people out there saying they liked this one better than the gourmet.
Il Capriccio – Italian
This a la carte restaurant service was slow, but the food was lovely.
Bars
Drinks at Bahia Principe Luxury Bouganville Hotel
Lobby Bar Tamarindo – Entertainment Bar
This bar has the most selection and labelled brands in the heart of the resort, where the drinks flow as freely as the conversation. However, be prepared to tip if you want them!
Open day and night.
Lobby Bar Palmira – Live Musician
Rhythmic beats and soul-stirring melodies made for enchanting evenings, this bar is a quieter area away from the main lobby entertainment, they played live music. We sat here most nights to play cards with our drinks.
Tropical Pool Bar – Quiet Pool
This was where we spent most of our time, at the pool bar.
The bar staff managed a non-stop pace with impeccable service and ceaseless smiles, even when Luke’s mum was trying to get drinks before they had opened!!
Anthony was a fantastic barman, always busy. If they get time, they bring drinks for you, too.
Every day the cocktail of the day changed; they all tasted great!
Arrecife Pool Bar – Main Pool
Bubbling with activity, this pool bar was always busier than the other pool bar, with people quenching a thirst for fun.
Jacuzzi Bar
This bar is handy if you don’t want to get in the pool for a drink, but there seemed to be a smaller choice available here.
Coffee Bar
There is a self-serve coffee bar which you can use to get coffee or other hot drinks any time of the day.
They also have sandwiches, cakes and fruit baskets there too!
Hibyscus – Beach Bar
Sandy feet and tropical treats paired perfectly beneath the coconut palms. The beach bar is there to serve all day whilst you enjoy the beach. And also, in the evening, during the beach party.
Staff
The staff’s English wasn’t quite up to what I expected, considering most visitors are Americans. Good thing I know some Spanish, which helped bridge the language barrier. It’s advisable to pick up some basic Spanish before your visit.
The staff exhibited kindness and politeness and appeared content in their roles, which reflected in the exceptional service we received; and as I’ll explain next, tipping really helped to get the best service.
Tipping
Tipping is very common at this hotel, more than we’re used to on other holidays. We British just aren’t used to it. We usually tip big at the end of the holiday to our favourite staff members who we felt went the extra mile.
However, we soon learnt things work differently here. There are loads of American guests at this hotel who tip for everything you can think of, from sliding notes for drinks at the bar, the waiter who shows them to their table, the buggy driver, to tipping the chef for cooking a fried egg at breakfast.
I wanted to alert you all because when we first turned up, we found that we were not getting served. I would not say the staff expect it, but when they have multiple people waving money at them, they will serve them before you, so you end up joining in with the American way of tipping!
When you show the notes, they will serve and even approach you while sitting around the pool. In the restaurants, you will be served drinks quicker, and during the evening entertainment, you will get better table service if you tip.
So I advise you to take plenty of $1 notes with you to ensure you get the best service by tipping a little every day!!
Cigar Shop
If you like a cigar, they have plenty of choice in this shop and alcohol too.
Bahia Principe Village
Take a stroll around the Bahia Principe Village, where you will find shops, fast food, and a 24-hour doctor’s.
Gym
Spa
I didn’t have a massage, so I can’t comment on the service. You will find the up-to-date costs and services on the Bahia app.
Massage and Hair Braiding
They also offer massages and hair braiding at the main entertainment pool, which I found strange! In my opinion, it is far too busy and loud there to have a relaxing massage!
